Worksheets for Grace and Beth

Click here to download a ZIP file that contains worksheets for every verse in John.  If you don't know how to extract files from a ZIP, get back to me and I can do a Zoom with you.

I will try to come up with worksheets on the rest of the NT over the next few days.

John 4:21

I sent you an email about the plural/singular forms of Jerusalem.  But there is still an outstanding question about "Why ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ (on this mountain) rather than ἐπι τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ (on this mountain).

I did some research, and this is what I came up with.

ἐν typically means "in" while ἐπί more commonly means "on". However, in this case, ἐν is being used in a broader spatial sense to mean "on" or "at" the mountain. There are a few reasons why ἐν may have been chosen over ἐπί here:
  1. ἐν can have a broader range of spatial meanings beyond just "in", including "on" or "at" in certain contexts.
  2. Mountains were often viewed as sacred places where worship occurred. Using ἐν may convey the sense of worshipping "in the sacred space of the mountain", rather than just physically on top of it.
  3. ἐν is sometimes used interchangeably with ἐπί in Koine Greek to express location, especially with larger geographical features like mountains or regions.
  4. The phrase ἐν τῷ ὄρει ("on the mountain") appears to be a fairly common construction in the New Testament and Septuagint for referring to being on a mountain.

    It occurs 5X in the NT:  Lk 8:32, Jn. 4:20 & 21, Acts 7:38, Heb. 8:5.
  5. There may be influence from Hebrew/Aramaic usage, where the preposition ב (be-) can mean both "in" and "on".
So while ἐπί would also work grammatically, the use of ἐν here is not unusual and likely carries a similar spatial meaning of "on" or "at" the mountain in this context. The choice between the two prepositions can sometimes be fluid in Koine Greek.

Pronouns

I have had some confusion myself around the types of pronouns that exist in Greek. I made a PDF for myself to stick in my worksheet binder.  Here is the page on pronouns, and below is a video I made for you two about how I am turning my binder of worksheets into my own, personalized Greek textbook.
