The Byzantine Text, Read Aloud:  Acts 2:40-44

By this time, you have noticed that the medieval, "Byzantine text" of the NT typically includes more words than Luke's original text, selcom less.  The medieval scribes that made this version felt it was their job to expand on Luke's writing...to make him more clear, to explain a bit more.

I have said in the past that Maurice Robinson has done us a service by pulling together the Greek text that underlies the King James Version, and this is definitely true.  It is also true that he has a wonderful reading voice—very clear and easy to understand.

But he didn't compile the Byzantine text as an academic exercise.  He actually believes that manuscripts from AD 1300 are closer to the originals than copies from AD 300...or even AD 150.  His arguments are never very convincing to me, but you may find it interesting to read more about him at Wikipedia.

40 ετεροις τε λογοις πλειοσιν διεμαρτυρετο και παρεκαλει λεγων σωθητε απο της γενεας της σκολιας ταυτης

41 οι μεν ουν ασμενως αποδεξαμενοι τον λογον αυτου εβαπτισθησαν και προσετεθησαν τη ημερα εκεινη ψυχαι ωσει τρισχιλιαι

42 ησαν δε προσκαρτερουντες τη διδαχη των αποστολων και τη κοινωνια και τη κλασει του αρτου και ταις προσευχαις

43 Ἐγίνετο δὲ πάσῃ ψυχῇ φόβος, πολλά τε τέρατα καὶ σημεῖα διὰ τῶν ἀποστόλων ἐγίνετο.
