Lesson 30a — Acts 2:12-14

I had an idea!  Since most of you now own a "Reader's Edition" GNT...

...rather than just taking one pass through a verse, to see what words you recognize, followed by StepBible, you can take THREE passes.

Pass #1:  Translate as many words as you can on your own.

Pass #2:  Use your reader's edition to fill in the words that are used less than 30 times in the NT.

Pass #3:  Go to StepBible and fill in all the remaining words.

The nice thing about adding pass #2, using your reader's edition, is that these are the words you never intend to memorize.  They are so uncommon that memorizing them is a poor use of your time.

Pass #3 highlights for you the words that you don't yet know...that you would indeed someday like to learn.

I will walk you through this with 2:12, and then let you do verses 13 and 14 on your own.

You can see that I know that ἄλλος means "another", but I don't know what part of speech it is.  That is, I don't know what category of word it is.  That is something I want to eventually learn.

• Finally, I go to verse 12 in StepBible and fill in the gaps.

To review, once you have these:

1. Fill in as much as you can on your own.
    
2. Use your reader's edition GNT to fill in the really rare words...words you will probably never seek to memorize.  You will always get them from your GNT or from the Internet.
   
   At this point, see if you can manage any sort of translation of these verses, even if it is only fragmentary.
    
3. Go to StepBible for these verses to fill in the gaps.

Your goal, of course, for two years from now is that you have no gaps available to fill in when you hit step 3.

At StepBible, these verses have several spots where different Greek editions have slightly different wording.  These are marked with upside down triangles.

Hover your mouse over the triangle to see what the differences are. None of them in these verses seem significant enough to make much of a difference in your translation.

¹² ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ διηπόρουν, ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες· Τί θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι;

¹³ ἕτεροι δὲ διαχλευάζοντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Γλεύκους μεμεστωμένοι εἰσίν.

¹⁴ Σταθεὶς δὲ ὁ Πέτρος σὺν τοῖς ἕνδεκα ἐπῆρεν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπεφθέγξατο αὐτοῖς· Ἄνδρες Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ἰερουσαλὴμ πάντες, τοῦτο ὑμῖν γνωστὸν ἔστω καὶ ἐνωτίσασθε τὰ ῥήματά μου.
